In the UK there are three main educational bodies that offer foot health courses to students wanting to train as foot health professionals (FHP’s).
Best Foot Health Course providers:
- Stonebridge Associated Colleges – http://www.stonebridge.uk.com
- SMAE Institute – http://www.smaeinstitute.co.uk
- College of Foot Health Practitioners (formerly the West Midlands School of Chiropody) – http://www.collegefhp.com
- Open College – http://www.openstudycollege.com/courses/foot-health-course.html
All of these colleges offer their training in two forms, theory modules and a practical course. With the theory you learn in the comfort of your own home or distance learning as it is called with a dedicated tutor on hand to help and guide you. The practical part is done over one or two weeks at a training facility equipped. Any of these Foot Health Courses enable the practitioner to perform basic foot care tasks such as nail cutting, corn and callus removal and treating conditions such as verrucae and athletes foot.
Prices for these Foot Health Courses vary, but on average you will pay around £2,000 for both theory and practical depending on how much practical training you do. But when you compare this to the amount you can earn it is more than worth it. For more information click here and get our newsletter: Foot Health Training Courses
Once qualified as a FHP you will become a registered member of that particular college which will enable you to do updated training and obtain the required insurance cover. However, you will not be able to use the title ‘Chiropodist’ or ‘Podiatrist’ as these are now legally protected titles.
Practitioner opportunities in the Foot Health Industry
If you are looking for how the foot health industry exists in the UK in it’s present form, then listed below is the structure based on educational requirements (And this excludes one of the biggest sectors – Footwear):
- Podiatrist
- Podiatry Assistant or Foot Care Assistant (Medical Pedicure® in the USA)
- Foot Health Professional
- Nail Technician/Pedicurist (Medi Pedi’s in the USA)
- Reflexologists
A Podiatrist is at the professional end of foot care with surgery and biomechanical assessments. Foot health courses for Podiatrists are normally full time tertiary university degrees although part time courses are available.
With a Podiatry assistant you need to complete around 500 hours of supervised practice (NHS or Private) with both oral and practical assessments.
Although at the lower end of the scale a good way into the foot health industry is to train as a nail technition or Pedicurist. They of ten form part of a beauty therapist course but can be done individually at some colleges. They are aimed at beautifying the foot, many people just find they need their nails cut, and so the income potential of a nail technician is not that different from that of a foot health practitioner.
Generally FHP’s have a domicillary practice, visiting patients in their own home. However, this has many advantages with part time working, child care arrangements, holidays and keeping business overheads to a minimum.
The best thing about being a well trained and competent FHP and completing one of the above Foot Health Courses, is that you can earn almost as much as a 3 year, degree trained Podiatrist if you set your practice up correctly.
